| Susan, you too are like a babe in the woods as far as your toddler is concerned. |

When children learn to walk, they are called toddlers. Usually this term is applied to one and two-year-old children. This is a stage in the growth of a child and not a specific age. The toddler stage is very important in a child's life. It is the time between infancy and childhood when a child learns and grows in many ways. Everything that happens to the toddler is meaningful. With each stage or skill the child masters, a new stage begins. This growth is unique to each child. Children have their own time-table. During the toddler stage, most children learn to walk, talk, solve problems, relate to others, and more. One major task for the toddler is to learn to be independent. That is why toddlers want to do things for themselves, have their own ideas about how things should happen, and use "no" many times each day.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
- They usually grow less rapidly than during infancy.
- They may eat less, but they tend to eat frequently throughout the day.
- Most walk without support by 14 months.
- Most walk backward and up steps by 22 months.
- They get better at feeding themselves, although spills should still be expected.
- They drink from a cup with help.
- They can stack blocks.
- They can scribble.

Your 2 year old has a habit of calling you by your name instead of "Mom" or "Dad". What is your reaction? |
|
|
It's very common for a first-born child between the ages of eighteen months and three years to call her parents by their first names. She imitates what she hears and since her parents and their friends, neighbors, and relatives all use first names when talking to each other, she uses first names too. Even if her parents call each other "Mom" and "Dad," she may still use first names because those are the ones she hears most often.
Many parents don't mind if their child occasionally uses first names, although some consider anything other than "Mom" and "Dad" disrespectful. When a child uses her parents' first names, however, she intends no disrespect-usually she's just mimicking what other people say. Over time, this imitative behavior will diminish and the child will stop using her parents' names.

Your child wants to be carried whenever you are out. Why do you think that happens? |
|
|
Toddlers scramble out of their strollers, climb on anything handy, and insist on being picked up because they want to see better and reach farther. When a child stands on the floor, he can't look out of most windows. Beds and toilets seem very high and big, and doorknobs and light switches are unreachable.
In public places, almost nothing is placed at a child's eye level. One mother walked into a health clinic and introduced her three-year-old son to the receptionist, who was sitting behind a high counter. The boy couldn't see anyone to say hello to and just stared at the wall in front of him until the woman peeked over to look at him.
