You might say that we count on other people to reveal themselves by an injudicious show of emotion, but there is more to empathy than what our five senses distinguish. The intuitive part of our minds - our extra-sensory perception or 'sixth sense - picks up things that our other senses fail to recognize. Sometimes you just 'know' something without necessarily knowing how or why. You know that so-and-so will burst into tears, or that someone else will make an excuse and leave the room. For much of the time we seem to make no conscious effort even to notice, let alone pay attention to or try to make sense of, the masses of data we are assimilating. It is as if we are simply acting as a sponge, soaking it all up and storing it away deep beneath the surface for no apparent purpose other than for future reference should the need arise.
