The 2004 Olympic Games have two mascots, Athena and Phavos, who are brother and sister and named for two Olympian gods. They represent the values of Olympism: participation, brotherhood, equality, cooperation, fair play. They are dolls so they also remind us of the pleasure of indulging in games. And finally they are siblings, a boy and a girl, to symbolize equality and brotherhood around the world.
Athena is named for the Athena, goddess of wisdom and patron saint of the city of Athens.
Phavos is named for the god of light and music, known as Apollo.
